The last runner finished the race more than an hour before.

마지막 주자가 한 시간도 더 전에 경주를 끝냈다.

“There will be no more runners coming,” the officials decided.

“더 들어오는 선수는 없을 겁니다,”라고 경기 임원들은 결론을 내렸다.

They removed the tape at the finish line and started to prepare for the closing ceremony for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics in the United States.

그들은 결승선에서 테이프를 걷어 내고 1996년 미국 애틀랜타 하계 올림픽의 폐막식을 준비하기 시작했다.

Someone shouted, “Look! There comes another runner!”

누군가가 외쳤다. “봐! 저기 또 다른 선수가 온다!”

A runner was just entering the stadium, but there was something wrong with his legs.

한 선수가 경기장으로 막 들어오고 있었는데, 그의 다리에 이상이 있었다.

Still, he kept going toward the finish line.

그러나 그는 계속 결승선을 향해 움직였다.

The band and the volunteers stopped their preparations for the closing ceremony.

밴드와 자원봉사자들이 폐막식을 위한 준비를 멈추었다.

All eyes were on the runner.

모든 눈들이 그 선수에게 머물렀다.

Suddenly, the band started playing celebration music, and the volunteers cheered.

갑자기 밴드가 축하 음악을 연주하기 시작했고, 자원봉사자들이 환호했다.

“Go! Go! Go for it!”

“달려! 달려! 잘해라!”

Two volunteers ran to the finish line with a tape.

두 명의 자원봉사자가 테이프를 가지고 결승선으로 달려갔다.

Finally, the runner ran through the tape and then fell to the ground.

결국, 그 주자는 테이프를 통과해 달렸고, 바닥에 쓰러졌다.

His name was Abdul Baser Wasiqi.

그의 이름은 ‘압둘 베사르 와시키’였다.

He was from Afghanistan.

그는 아프가니스탄 출신이었다.

Reporters came up to Wasiqi and started asking him questions.

리포터들은 와시키에게 가서 그에게 질문을 하기 시작했다.

What happened to you?

I injured my leg during a practice run.

I was sad for my country back then when I could see no Afghan athletes in the opening ceremony.

저는 개회식에서 아프가니스탄 선수를 볼 수 없었던 그 당시, 제 나라에 대해 매우 슬펐습니다.

Were you running marathons then?

그 당시 마라톤을 뛰고 있었나요?

No. I started running after Barcelona.

아니요.

I ran in lots of races.

저는 많은 경주에서 뛰었어요.

Finally I won a marathon in Germany.

마침내 독일 마라톤에서 우승했지요.

As a result, I was able to come to Atlanta.

그 결과 애틀랜타에 올 수 있었어요.

How do you feel now?

지금은 기분이 어떠신가요?

I’m proud of myself and proud to be from Afghanistan.

저는 제 자신이, 그리고 제가 아프가니스탄 출신인 것이 자랑스러워요.

For me and my country, it was important not to give up.

저와 제 조국을 위해서는, 포기하지 않는 것이 중요했어요.

I didn’t come here to win.

저는 이곳에 이기러 온 것이 아닙니다.

For me, it was enough to be here and to finish the race.

제가 여기에 있고 경주를 끝마친 것으로 충분합니다.
