Today we’re going to talk about the movie Coach Carter.

오늘 우리는 영화 「코치 카터」에 대해 이야기할 것입니다.

Can you imagine a basketball coach who doesn’t allow his players to practice?

선수들이 연습하는 것을 허락하지 않는 농구 코치를 상상할 수 있나요?

That’s exactly what Coach Carter does.

그것이 바로 카터 코치가 한 것입니다.

This movie is about a coach who cares more about his students than about winning games.

이 영화는 경기에서 이기는 것보다 학생들을 더 걱정하는 코치에 대한 영화입니다.

The basketball team at Richmond High School in Richmond, California, was having one losing season after another.

캘리포니아 리치먼드 지역의 리치먼드 고등학교 농구 팀은 연속해서 경기에서 지고 있었습니다.

The players became used to losing.

선수들도 지는것에 익숙하게 되었습니다.

To make matters worse, they had no plans for the future.

설상가상으로 그들은 미래에 대한 계획도 없었습니다.

They went to school only to play basketball, and they did not do that very well.

즉, 그들은 단지 농구하기 위해 학교에 갔고, 그것마저도 잘하지 못했습니다.

Then they got a new coach, Kenny Carter.

그때 그들은 케니 카터라는 새로운 코치를 선임했습니다.

Coach Carter wanted to change things.

카터 코치는 몇 가지를 바꾸고자 했습니다.

He wanted to teach kids how to play basketball well and win.

그는 아이들에게 어떻게 농구를 잘하고이기는지를 가르치기를 원했습니다.

But more than that, he wanted to give the players a future by sending them to college.

To carry out his plan, Coach Carter had the players sign a contract.

They had to promise to study hard in addition to playing basketball.

At first, students did not take his idea for a contract seriously.

You will get a big bonus because you will become a winner in the game of basketball as well as in the game of life.

너는 큰 보너스를 받게 될 거야. 왜냐하면 인생의 게임에서뿐 아니라 농구경기에서도 승리자가 될 것이기 때문이지.

With hard work and a new game plan, the team began to win for the first time in many years.

맹연습과 새로운 경기 전략으로 그 팀은 몇 년 만에 처음으로이기기 시작했습니다.

From that point on, they won game after game.

그때 이후로 경기마다 이겼습니다.

Everybody, except Coach Carter, was happy.

카터 코치를 제외한 모든 이들이 행복했습니다.

The players did not do the “study” part of their contract.

선수들은 그들 계약의 ‘학습’ 부분을 하지 않았습니다.

Few of them actually believed they could go to college, so they paid little attention to their grades.

그들 중 정말 그들이 대학을 갈 수 있다고 믿는 사람들은 소수였습니다. 그래서 그들은 성적에는 거의 관심을 두지 않았습니다.

Carter decided to take stronger action.

카터는 더 강력한 조치를 취하기로 결심했습니다.

He locked the gym and refused to let them play basketball until their grades improved, as promised in the contract.

The players did not like it.

선수들은 그것을 좋아하지 않았습니다.

They told him that his actions were just for him, not for them.

The players’ parents did not like Carter’s decision either.

At the parents’ demand, the principal ordered Carter to reopen the gym.

부모들의 요구에따라 교장은 카터에게 체육관을 다시 열도록 했습니다.

Disappointed, Carter decided to leave Richmond High.

실망한 카터는 리치먼드 고등학교를 떠나기로 결심했습니다.

When he entered the gym to pack his things, however, all of his players were there.

그가 짐을 싸기 위해 체육관으로 들어섰을때, 그의 선수들 모두가 그곳에 있었습니다.
