Readers love his tales of Alice and her journeys through a magical world.

However, people may not know that Carroll was also a gifted mathematician.

하지만, 사람들은 캐럴이 또한 재능 있는 수학자였다는 것은 잘 모를 것이다.

He taught math and logic to university students and published books about mathematics.

Some researchers say he loved to hide numbers and mathematical ideas in his tales.

One example is found in chapter five of Alice in Wonderland.

In 1866, a strange sea monster is attacking ships around the world.

So the US government sends an expedition to hunt the monster.

The expedition includes a scientist named Pierre Aronnax, his servant Conseil, and a hunter called Ned Land.

탐험대에는 피에르 아로낙스라는 이름의 과학자, 그의 하인 콩세유, 네드 랜드라는 사냥꾼이 포함되어 있다.

After several months, the expedition finds the fierce creature thatthey have been searching for.

However, the monster that has been attacking ships is actually a submarine called the Nautilus.

하지만 배를 공격해 오던 그 괴물은 사실 노틸러스라는 잠수함이다.

After a brief battle, Aronnax, Conseil, and Ned get captured.

짧은 전투 끝에, 아로낙스, 콩세유, 네드는 붙잡힌다.

The men are guided into the submarine.

그 남자들은 잠수함으로 안내된다.

And they meet the submarine’s commander, Captain Nemo.

그리고 그들은 잠수함의 지휘관인 네모 선장을 만난다.

Nemo lets the captives explore the Nautilus, though he makes it clear that they can never leave.

Then he takes them on many adventures.
