My 10-year-old appeared, in desperate need of a quarter.

내 열 살짜리 아이가 나타났고, 25센트 동전을 절실히 필요로 했다.

“A quarter? What on earth do you need a quarter for?”

“25센트 동전? 도대체 25센트 동전이 왜 필요하지?”

My tone bordered on irritation.

나의 말투는 거의 짜증에 가까웠다.

I didn’t want to be bothered with such a trivial demand.

나는 그런 사소한 요구에 방해 받고 싶지 않았다.

“There’s a garage sale up the street, and there’s something I just gotta have! It only costs a quarter. Please?”

“거리 위쪽에서 중고 물품 판매 행사를 하는데, 제가 꼭 사야 할 게 있어요! 25센트밖에 안 해요. 네?”

I placed a quarter in my son’s hand.

나는 아들의 손에 25센트 동전을 쥐여 주었다.

Moments later, a little voice said, “Here, Mommy, this is for you.”

잠시 후 작은 목소리가 “여기요, 엄마, 이거 엄마를 위한 거예요.”라고 말했다.

I glanced down at the hands of my little son and saw a four-inch creamcolored statue of two small children hugging one another.

나는 내 어린 아들의 손을 힐끗 내려다보았고, 두 어린아이가 서로 껴안고 있는 4인치짜리 크림색의 조각상을 보았다.

Inscribed at their feet were words that read "It starts with ‘L’ ends with ‘E’ and in between are ‘O’ and ‘V.’"

그들의 발밑에는" ‘L’로 시작하여 ‘E’로 끝나고 그 사이에 ‘O’와 ‘V’가 있다"는 말이 새겨져 있었다.

As I watched him race back to the garage sale, I smiled with a heart full of happiness.

아이가 중고 물품 판매 행사로 서둘러 돌아가는 모습을 바라보며 나는 행복이 가득한 마음으로 미소를 지었다.

That 25-cent garage sale purchase brought me a lot of joy.

그 25센트 짜리 중고 물품 판매 행사 구입품은 나에게 큰 기쁨을 가져다 주었다.
