Have you heard about Team Hoyt?

팀 호이트에 대해 들어 본 적이 있는가?

Its members were Dick Hoyt and his son Rick.

그 팀의 멤버들은 딕 호이트와 그의 아들 릭이었다.

Together, they joined many marathon races and other competitions.

그들은 함께 많은 마라톤 경기와 기타 대회들에 참가했다.

What’s surprising is that Rick, now in his 60s, has been unable to walk or talk since birth.

놀라운 것은 현재 60대인 릭이 태어날 때부터 걷지도 말하지도 못한다는 것이다.

Rick has been in a wheelchair all his life because of a serious medical condition.

릭은 심각한 질병으로 인해 평생 휠체어를 타고 있다.

Since the age of 11, he has been able to communicate with others through a computer.

11세 이후로 그는 컴퓨터를 통해 다른 사람들과 의사소통을 할 수 있었다.

One day he told his dad he wanted to take part in a five-mile run.

어느 날 그는 아버지에게 5마일 달리기에 참가하고 싶다고 말했다.

But how would he be able to do it?

그러나 그가 어떻게 그것을 할 수 있겠는가?

Dick looked for ways to realize his son’s dream and finally thought up an idea how they could run the race together.

딕은 아들의 꿈을 실현할 방법들을 찾아보았고 마침내 그들이 함께 경기를 뛸 수 있는 방법을 생각해 냈다.

During the race, Dick ran and pushed Rick in his wheelchair.

경기 중, 딕은 달리면서 휠체어에 있는 릭을 밀어주었다.

They finished behind most of the other runners, but Rick felt something special during the race.

그들은 대부분의 다른 선수들 뒤에 쳐져서 (경기를) 마쳤지만, 릭은 경기 중 특별한 무언가를 느꼈다.

He didn’t feel handicapped anymore!

그는 더 이상 장애가 있는 것으로 느껴지지 않았던 것이다!

This experience changed both Rick and his family forever.

이 경험은 릭과 그의 가족 모두를 영원히 변화시켰다.

The father-and-son team began racing more and more often.

이 부자로 구성된 팀은 점점 더 자주 경기에 참가하기 시작했다.

Though hard and full of difficulties, all the challenges have been worth it.

비록 힘들고 어려움들로 가득 찼지만 모든 도전들은 그만한 가치가 있었다.

More that that, the story of Team Hoyt has touched and encouraged many around the world and shown that people with disabilities can lead normal lives.

그보다 더 중요한 것은, 팀 호이트의 이야기는 전 세계 많은 이들을 감동하게 했고 용기를 주었으며, 장애를 가진 사람들이 보통의 삶을 살 수 있다는 것을 보여 주었다.

Q: Did you ever think you could become an athlete?

Q: 당신이 운동선수가 될 수 있으리라고 생각해 본 적이 있나요?

A: When I was born, the doctors told my parents that my brain couldn’t communicate with my muscles.

A: 제가 태어났을 때, 의사들이 제 부모님에게 저의 뇌는 근육들과 연결할 수 없다고 말했어요.

They even told my dad to forget about my future.

그들은 심지어 제 아버지에게 저의 미래에 대해 잊어버리라고 말했습니다.

But my parents believed I was a special boy with a bright future ahead of me.

그러나 저희 부모님은 제가 앞에 밝은 미래가 펼쳐져 있는 특별한 소년이라고 믿었습니다.

Because of their support, I thought I could do anything.

그들의 지원 덕분에, 저는 제가 무엇이든 할 수 있다고 생각했습니다.

Q: Why did you and your father participate in such hard sports?

Q: 왜 당신과 당신 아버지는 그렇게 힘든 경기에 참가했던 건가요?

A: One reason is that we loved it!

A: 한 가지 이유는 우리가 그것을 굉장히 좋아했다는 것이지요!

But that’s not the only reason.

We really hoped that through our achievements, we could show that I am just like everybody else.

Q: Have you ever experienced any difficulties during the races?

Q: 경기 중에 어려움을 겪은 적이 있나요?

A: Sure.

A: 물론 있지요.

In the early days, nobody wanted to talk to us.

초창기에는 어느 누구도 우리와 얘기하고 싶지 않아 했어요.

Some people didn't even want us to compete, and they were quite cold towards us.

어떤 사람들은 심지어 우리가 경기에 참가하는 것을 원하지 않았고, 그들은 우리에게 상당히 냉담했습니다

Finally, people realized how great we were and how much I was enjoying myself.

결국에 사람들은 우리가 얼마나 대단한지 그리고 제가 얼마나 많이 즐기고 있는지를 깨달았습니다.
