Companies are always looking for ways to increase productivity.

Increasing productivity means getting more output with the same amount of resources.

When the manufacturing industry first began, the famous economist Adam Smith described a way of making production more efficient.

It is known as the "division of labor."

Manufacturing goods involves several different processes requiring different skills.

Smith gave the example of the process of making pins: straightening the wire, sharpening it, putting on a head, and polishing it.

In the traditional way, a single worker would do all these tasks and make 20 pins in a day.

But this work can be divided into separate tasks.
