There are eight planets in our solar system.

우리 태양계에는 여덟 개의 행성이 있다.

But only two decades ago, there were nine planets.

하지만 고작 20년 전에는, 아홉 개의 행성이 있었다.

The ninth planet was Pluto.

그 아홉 번째 행성은 명왕성이었다.

So what happened to it?

그렇다면 그것(명왕성)에 무슨 일이 일어났을까?

In 2006, the IAU officially defined the term "planet."

2006년에 국제천문연맹은 ‘행성’이라는 용어를 공식적으로 정의했다.

According to this definition, a planet must meet three standards.

이 정의에 따르면, 행성은 세 가지 기준을 충족시켜야 한다.

First, it must orbit the sun.

첫째, 행성은 태양 주위를 돌아야(공전해야) 한다.

Second, it must be round.

둘째, 행성은 (공처럼) 둥근 모양이어야 한다.

Third, it must have cleared small objects out of its orbit.

셋째, 행성은 자신의 궤도에서 작은 물체들을 없앤 상태여야 한다.

As a planet travels, its gravity pulls other objects into its orbit or pushes them away.

행성이 이동할 때, 행성의 중력은 다른 물체들을 자신의 궤도 안으로 끌어당기거나 멀리 밀어 버린다.

Then the objects may crash into the planet or become moons.

그러면 그 물체들은 그 행성에 부딪히거나 (그 행성의) 위성이 될지도 모른다.

But Pluto doesn't meet this third standard.

하지만 명왕성은 이 세 번째 기준을 충족시키지 않는다.

It isn't big enough, so there are still small objects in its orbit.

그것은 크기가 충분히 크지 않아서, 그 궤도 내에 여전히 작은 물체들이 있다.

Because of this, Pluto is no longer considered a planet.

이 때문에, 명왕성은 더 이상 행성으로 여겨지지 않는다.

Now Pluto has a new title: dwarf planet.

이제 명왕성은 왜소행성이라는 새로운 호칭을 가지고 있다.

Some scientists don't agree with this.

어떤 과학자들은 이것에 동의하지 않는다.

But whether Pluto is a planet or not, nothing about Pluto itself has changed!
