Bacteria are almost everywhere.

박테리아는 거의 모든 곳에 있다.

They live in air, soil, and our bodies.

They are even found in some of the foods we eat!

Most bacteria are actually good for us.

Some live in our digestive systems and help us digest our food.

Others live in the environment and produce oxygen for us to breathe.

Unfortunately, there are some bacteria that can make us sick.

They produce harmful toxins and can cause infections.

When this happens, you need to see a doctor and get a kind of medicine that can control infections.

But what exactly is this medicine and how does it fight bacteria?

It is called "antibiotics."

This name means "against the life" of bacteria.

Antibiotics either kill bacteria or stop them from growing.

항생제는 박테리아를 죽이거나 박테리아가 늘어나는 것을 막는다.

Our immune system is often able to kill bacteria before they spread.

우리의 면역 체계는 보통 박테리아가 퍼지기 전에 그것들을 죽일 수 있다.

However, if the number of harmful bacteria increases, the immune system may not be able to kill them all.

하지만, 해로운 박테리아의 수가 증가하면, 면역 체계는 그것들을 모두 죽이지 못할 수도 있다.

In these situations, antibiotics are useful.
