Hi, I’m 60 years old and live on Jeju Island in Korea.

안녕하세요, 나는 60살이고 한국의 제주도에 살지요.

People call me “the mermaid of Jeju Island.”

사람들은 나를 ‘제주의 인어’라고 불러요.

Do you wonder why people call me that?

여러분은 왜 사람들이 나를 그렇게 부르는지 궁금한가요?

That’s because I’m a haenyeo.

그것은 내가 해녀이기 때문이에요.

Every day, I dive deep under the sea to catch fresh seafood and seaweed.

매일, 나는 신선한 해산물과 해초를 수확하기 위해 바다 속 깊이 잠수해요.

When I dive, I wear a wetsuit and goggles without an oxygen mask.

내가 잠수를 할 때, 나는 산소 마스크 없이 잠수복을 입고 물안경을 써요.

Collecting my underwater harvest, I hold my breath for up to two minutes!

나는 수중 수확물을 모을 때, 숨을 최대 2분까지 참아요.

When I come back up to the surface of the water, I make a strange sound called “sumbisori.”

내가 수면으로 다시 돌아올 때, 나는 ‘숨비소리’라고 불리는 이상한 소리를 내요.

It is a unique breathing technique of the haenyeo.

그것은 해녀의 독특한 호흡법이에요.

It plays an important role.

그것은 중요한 역할을 해요.

It lets other haenyeo know where I am.

그것은 다른 해녀들이 내가 어디 있는지 알게 해요.

So, when I first started this underwater work, I practiced hard.

그래서 내가 이 수중 일을 처음 시작했을 때 나는 열심히 연습했어요.

Haenyeo are experts on the sea and marine life.

해녀는 바다와 해양 생물의 전문가예요.

However, our work is difficult and dangerous, so we usually work together.

하지만 우리의 일은 어렵고 힘들어서 우리는 보통 함께 일해요.

Haenyeo are divided into three groups according to the level of experience: hagun, junggun and sanggun.

해녀는 경험의 정도에 따라 하군, 중군, 상군이라는 세 개의 그룹으로 나누어져요.

Haenyeo who have a lot of experience become sanggun, like me.

많은 경험을 가진 해녀는 나처럼 상군이 돼요.

Sanggun guide and help others.

상군은 다른 사람들을 이끌어 주고 도와줘요.

Being haenyeo is not easy, but I’m proud of my work.

해녀가 되는 것은 쉽지 않지만 나는 내 일이 자랑스러워요.
