Have you ever heard of an imaginary animal called Haetae?

‘해태’라고 불리는 상상의 동물에 대해 들어본 적이 있는가?

If you visit some places in Seoul, you will see statues of this animal.

당신이 서울의 몇몇 장소를 방문한다면, 이 동물의 조각상을 볼 수 있을 것이다.

Haetae has big eyes and horns, and looks like a lion.

해태는 큰 눈과 뿔을 가지고 있고 사자처럼 보인다.

In the past, people placed the statues of Haetae in front of some buildings because they believed it had some important characteristics.

과거에 사람들은 해태에게 몇 가지 중요한 특징이 있다고 믿었기 때문에 해태상을 몇몇 건물들 앞에 놓았다.

First of all, Haetae was considered wise because it could tell what was right and what was wrong.

우선, 해태는 무엇이 옳고 그른지 구별할 수 있었기 때문에 현명하다고 여겨졌다.

This is why there are Haetae statues in places like Gyeongbokgung Palace and the National Assembly building.

이것이 경복궁과 국회 의사당 같은 곳에 해태상이 있는 이유이다.

These are places where justice should be protected.

이곳들은 정의가 수호되어야 하는 장소들이다.

Haetae also kept fires and disasters away.

해태는 또한 화재와 재난을 막아주었다.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is a wooden structure, so it can catch fire easily.

경복궁은 목조 건물이어서 불이 쉽게 붙을 수 있다.

Therefore, people put Haetae statues in front of it for protection.

그러므로 사람들은 보호를 위해 해태상을 그 앞에 두었다.

Haetae has another name.

해태는 또 다른 이름이 있다.

Seoul made Haetae its mascot, and the character was named “Haechi.”

서울시는 해태를 마스코트로 삼았는데, 그 캐릭터는 ‘해치’라고 이름 붙여졌다.

The people of Seoul hope that Haechi will guard their city just as Haetae has guarded Gyeongbokgung Palace for centuries.

서울 시민들은 해치가 수 세기 동안 경복궁을 지켜온 것처럼 그들의 도시를 지켜주기를 바란다.
