Some people come here to find interesting stuff, while others come to look for things they need.

어떤 사람들은 재미있는 물건을 찾으러 이곳에 오는 반면에 다른 사람들은 그들이 필요로 하는 것들을 찾아서 온다.

The flea market was originally a night market in old European cities, and old or used goods were bought or sold there.

벼룩시장은 원래 옛 유럽 도시들의 야시장이었고, 그곳에서 오래된 물건이나 중고품들이 사고 팔렸다.

But where did flea markets get their unusual name?

하지만 벼룩시장은 어디에서 그 특이한 이름을 얻게 되었을까?

No one is sure, but there are some interesting stories.

아무도 확실히는 모르지만 몇 가지 재미있는 이야기가 있다.

One story says there were two types of merchants in Paris, those with licenses and those without licenses.

한 이야기는 파리에 두 유형의 상인이 있었는데 면허가 있는 사람들과 면허가 없는 사람들이 있었다고 한다.

The merchants with licenses could safely sell their products at markets.

면허가 있는 상인들은 자신들의 상품을 시장에서 안전하게 팔 수 있었다.

Those without licenses had to sell their goods on street corners.

면허가 없는 상인들은 길모퉁이에서 자신들의 상품을 팔아야 했다.

When the police came, they ran away.

경찰이 오면 그들은 도망을 갔다.

But as soon as the police left, they came back.

하지만 경찰이 떠나자마자 그들은 돌아왔다.

People thought this made them look like fleas, so they started calling these places “flea markets.”

사람들은 이것이 그들을 벼룩처럼 보이게 한다고 생각했고 그래서 그들은 이 장소를 ‘벼룩시장’이라고 부르기 시작했다.

Another story says that the name comes from cheap hotels.

People called these hotels “flea bags” because there were many fleas in them.

Later, they started calling the markets that sold cheap things “flea markets.”

Whatever the origin of the name is, flea markets are a popular destination where people go for something used or unusual, or even for fun.
