In the 14th century, the people of Calais, a small city in northern France, actually had to make this difficult decision.

14세기에 프랑스 북부의 작은 도시인 Calais(칼레)의 사람들은 실제로 이 어려운 결정을 내려야 했다.

The city was surrounded by the English army.

그 도시는 영국 군대로 둘러싸여 있었다.

The citizens of Calais fought hard, but eventually had to surrender.

Calais의 시민들은 열심히 싸웠지만 결국 항복해야만 했다.

At first, the king of England wanted to kill everyone in the city, but he changed his mind.

처음에, 영국의 왕은 도시의 모든 사람들을 죽이고 싶었지만, 그는 마음을 바꿨다.

He said, “If six people choose to die, the rest of you can live.”

At first, the citizens were confused, but soon the richest citizen of Calais, Saint Pierre, volunteered.

People were moved by his sacrifice, and volunteered one by one, including a famous lawyer, a wealthy merchant and so on.

When these six men came to the king, the queen persuaded the king not to kill them, and they survived.

This story is a well-known example of the French expression, “noblesse oblige.”

It means that those who are privileged have responsibility to help others.
