A father and son were flying a kite at a park.

아버지와 아들이 공원에서 연을 날리고 있었다.

Soon the kite was high up in the sky.

곧 연이 하늘 높이 올라갔다.

After a while, the son said,

잠시 후에 아들이 말했다.

“Dad, I want my kite to soar above the clouds, but the string is holding it down.

“아빠, 저는 연을 구름 위로 날아오르게 하고 싶은데, 연줄이 그것을 아래로 붙잡고 있어요.

Can we cut the string and set the kite free?”

연줄을 끊어서 연을 자유롭게 할 수 있을까요?”

So, the father cut the string.

그래서 아버지는 연줄을 끊었다.

The boy cheered as the kite climbed higher.

연이 더 높이 올라가자, 소년은 환호성을 질렀다.

But the kite slowly started to come down, and soon it hit the ground.

하지만 그 연은 천천히 내려오기 시작하더니, 곧 바닥에 부딪혀 버렸다.

The son was confused.

아들은 혼란스러웠다.

“Dad, we set the kite free.

“아빠, 우리가 연을 자유롭게 했잖아요.

Why did it fall from the sky?”

왜 그것이 하늘에서 떨어졌죠?”

The father explained, “Son, the string does not hold the kite down.

아버지가 설명했다. “아들아, 연줄은 연을 아래로 붙잡는 것이 아니란다.

It provides a force that helps the wind keep the kite high in the air.

그것은 바람이 연을 공중에서 높이 있을 수 있도록 돕는 힘을 제공한단다.

You control the kite thanks to the string.”

너는 줄 덕분에 연을 통제하는 거란다.”

The son was surprised to hear that.

아들은 그것을 듣고 놀랐다.

His father continued,

아버지는 계속해서 말했다.

“Sometimes we think of our family and friends as a string that holds us down.

“때때로 우리는 가족이나 친구를 우리를 아래로 붙잡고 있는 연줄처럼 생각한단다.

We feel we can soar higher without them.

우리는 그들이 없으면 더 높이 날 수 있을 거라고 느끼지.

But remember, Son, they are helping us stay up and climb even higher.”

하지만 아들아, 명심하렴. 그들은 우리가 위에 머무르고 훨씬 더 높이 오르도록 돕고 있는 거란다.”
