Whose side will you take?

당신은 어느 편을 들 것인가?

If you say, “I will cheer for the weaker one”, then you are cheering for “the underdog.”

만약 당신이 “나는 약자를 응원하겠다”고 말한다면, 당신은 ‘언더독’을 응원하고 있다.

The term “underdog” refers to a person or a team that seems to have a poor chance of winning or achieving success.

‘언더독’이라는 용어는 이기거나 성공을 성취할 가능성이 낮은 것처럼 보이는 사람 또는 팀을 가리킨다.

One old example of an underdog is in Aesop’s fable, The Tortoise and the Hare.

언더독의 한 가지 오래된 예는 이솝 우화의 ‘토끼와 거북’에 있다.

As we all know, the tortoise, the underdog, never gives up and wins the race eventually.

우리 모두가 알다시피, 언더독인 거북은 절대 포기하지 않고 마침내 경주에서 승리한다.

While reading this story, many people cheer for the tortoise.

A more recent example is Iceland’s team during the 2016 European Championship.

During the Championship, the Icelandic team was considered the weakest among the participating nations and nobody paid much attention to them.

However, to everyone’s surprise, Iceland went all the way to the quarterfinals, beating the English team in the round of 16.

Many people cheered for Iceland at that time.

Many people cheer for the underdogs that overcome difficulties and triumph in the end.

Maybe this is because we ourselves have been underdogs at some point in our lives.

아마도 이것은 우리 자신이 인생의 어느 시점에서 언더독이었던 적이 있었기 때문일 것이다.

Underdogs give people hope that anyone can succeed.

언더독은 사람들에게 누구나 성공할 수 있다는 희망을 준다.
