Imagine you bought an airline ticket.

당신이 비행기 표를 샀다고 상상해보라.

But when you arrive at the airport, the flight is already full.

하지만 당신이 공항에 도착했을 때, 그 항공기는 이미 만석이다.

What happened? Actually, it wasn’t a mistake.

무슨 일이 일어난 것일까? 사실, 그것은 착오가 아니었다.

Airlines often sell more tickets than they should.

항공사는 흔히 그들이 팔아야 하는 표보다 더 많이 판매한다.

This is because they expect some no-shows—people who buy a ticket but don’t show up at the airport.

이것은 그들이 표는 사지만 공항에 나타나지 않는 사람들인 노쇼를 예상하기 때문이다.

Sometimes, however, this practice results in overbooked flights, which don’t have enough seats for everyone.

When this happens, the airline looks for people who will volunteer to miss the flight.

In return, they get money or some other reward.

However, if no one volunteers, the airline chooses people to miss the flight.

Sometimes they choose randomly; other times the people who bought their tickets most recently lose their seat.

This can create a very annoying and inconvenient situation.
