Imagine a honeycomb.

It has hundreds of small cells.

A honeycomb cell has six sides, so it is a hexagon.

한 벌집 방은 여섯 개의 면을 가지고 있으므로 육각형입니다.

Honeybees lay eggs inside these hexagonal cells and store their honey in them.

꿀벌들은 이러한 육각형 방안에 알을 낳거나 꿀을 저장합니다.

But why are all honeycomb cells shaped the same?

하지만 왜 모든 벌집 방은 같은 모양일까요?

First, a hexagonal shape saves more space than other shapes.

우선, 육각형 모양은 다른 모양보다 더 많은 공간을 절약합니다.

What if bees built their honeycomb cells with circular shapes?

만약 벌들이 그들의 벌집 방을 원형 모양으로 짓는다면 어떨까요?

There would be gaps between the circles.

A hexagonal shape doesn’t leave gaps and therefore saves space.
