Living Dragons

살아있는 용

Long ago, rumors spread about a dragon-like creature on Komodo, an Indonesian island.

오래 전, 인도네시아 코모도 섬에서 용과 비슷한 생명체에 대한 소문이 퍼졌다.

Over time, it became known as the Komodo dragon.

Although it is called a dragon, this animal is actually a lizard.

Komodo dragons are the largest lizards on Earth.

The King Who Became a Dragon

During King Gyeonsun’s rule, the Hyeongsan River could not flow to the sea because of Mount Hyeongje.

So it often flooded after heavy rains.

This was a huge problem for the people of Gyeongju.

The king ordered his people to dig a sluice through the mountain.

This would control the river’s water levels.

They tried but failed.

When the king heard this news, he felt great sadness.

He wanted to make a safe city for his people.

He promised to turn into a dragon after he died and crush the mountain.

Upon his death, the king became a giant serpent.

Before he could turn into a dragon, he had to wait on a plain.

Day by day, people passed by him without a word.

Then one day, a boy named Yugeumi saw the serpent and shouted, “Here comes Lord Dragon!”

As soon as he said those words, the serpent transformed into a powerful dragon.

Before the dragon flew away, he split the mountain in two as he promised.

용이 날아가 버리기 전에, 그는 약속대로 산을 둘로 쪼갰다.

The river could now flow toward the sea.

Later, the plain was named Yugeumi Plain after the young boy, and the two mountains became Mount Hyeong and Mount Je.
