Money and Its Many Meanings

돈과 그것의 다양한 의미

When people are asked what they value most in their lives, their answers vary.

사람들이 자신이 인생에서 무엇을 가장 가치 있게 여기는지 질문을 받을 때, 그들의 대답은 다양하다.

Most say that leading a healthy life is high on their list of priorities.

대부분은 건강한 삶을 사는 것이 우선순위 목록에 높이 자리하고 있다고 이야기한다.

Also, many say that having a job they love is of extreme importance.

또, 많은 이들은 그들이 사랑하는 직업을 갖는 것이 아주 중요하다고 이야기한다.

But what about making money?

하지만 돈을 버는 것은 어떤가?

How important is it in your life?

To properly answer this question, you may need to know the true meaning of money.

The following three stories highlight various meanings of money.

Rai of Yap

Yap 섬의 Rai

The island of Yap, located in the Pacific Ocean between Guam and Palau, had been untouched by modern civilization until the 1800s.

Guam과 Palau 사이 태평양에 위치한 Yap 섬은 1800년대까지 현대 문명의 손길이 닿지 않았다.

You may think that they shouldn't have had their own monetary system because they were not modernized.

However, the people of Yap had a very advanced and well developed system of money.

They used rai ― large, thick round stone wheels with a hole cut in the middle in which they could insert a pole to help transport them.
