The Story of Two Pebbles

두 개의 조약돌 이야기

Many years ago in a small Chinese village, a farmer called Feng had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender.

오래 전 중국의 작은 마을에 Feng이라고 불리는 농부가 마을의 대금업자에게 큰 액수의 빚을 지는 불운을 겪었다.

The moneylender, who was old and ugly, was in love with the farmer's beautiful daughter, Mei.

나이 많고 못생긴 대금업자는 농부의 아름다운 딸 Mei를 사랑했다.

So he proposed a bargain.

그래서 그는 거래를 제안했다.

He said he would forgive Feng's debt if he could marry his daughter.

그는 그가 Feng의 딸과 결혼할 수 있다면 Feng의 빚을 탕감해 주겠다고 말했다.

Both the farmer and his daughter were frightened by the proposal.

농부와 그의 딸은 그 제안에 소스라치게 놀랐다.

So the moneylender suggested that they let fate decide the matter.

그래서 대금업자는 그들이 그 문제를 운명이 결정하도록 할 것을 제안했다.

He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty bag.

그는 그들에게 그가 빈 주머니에 검은색 조약돌 한 개와 하얀색 조약돌 한 개를 넣을 것이라고 말했다.

Then, Mei would have to pick one pebble from the bag.

그러면 Mei가 주머니에서 한 개의 조약돌을 꺼내야 할 것이었다.

If Mei picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven.

만일 Mei가 검은색 조약돌을 집으면, 그녀는 그의 아내가 될 것이고 그녀 아버지의 빚은 탕감될 것이다.

If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven.

만일 그녀가 하얀색 조약돌을 집으면, 그녀는 그와 결혼할 필요가 없고 그녀 아버지의 빚은 여전히 탕감될 것이다.

But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown in jail.

그러나 만일 그녀가 조약돌 집기를 거부하면, 그녀의 아버지는 감옥에 가게 될 것이다.
