Saturday morning came.

토요일 오전이 되었다.

The summer was full of life.

여름은 활기로 가득 차 있었다.

Everything was bright and fresh, but…

모든 것이 밝고 신선했다. 하지만…

Tom came outside with a can of white paint and a brush.

톰은 흰색 페인트 통 하나와 붓을 들고 밖으로 나왔다.

His aunt had angrily told him to paint the fence as a punishment for skipping school.

그의 이모는 그에게 학교를 빼먹은 벌로 울타리에 페인트칠을 하라고 화를 내며 말했다.

With a sigh, he began to paint.

한숨과 함께 그는 페인트칠을 하기 시작했다.

Soon a boy named Ben came along, eating an apple.

곧 벤이라는 이름의 소년이 사과를 먹으며 다가왔다.

Ben was a mean boy who always teased Tom.

벤은 항상 톰을 놀려대는 심술궂은 소년이었다.

He stopped beside Tom and said, “Hey, Tom.

그는 톰 옆에 서서 말했다. “야, 톰.

You must be in trouble.

너 난처한 상황이구나.

You have to work!”

일해야 하나보다!”

Tom looked at him for a moment and said, “What do you mean, ‘work’?”

톰은 잠시 그를 바라보곤 말했다. “‘일’이라니 무슨 뜻이야?”

“Isn’t that work?” asked Ben.

“그거 일 아니야?” 벤이 물었다.

“Not at all!

“천만에!

How often does a boy get a chance to paint a fence?”

남자아이가 얼마나 자주 울타리를 칠할 기회를 얻겠어?”

Ben stopped eating the apple and watched Tom, who pretended to love every minute of painting the fence.

벤은 사과 먹는 것을 멈추고 톰을 바라보았다. 톰은 울타리를 페인트칠하는 매 순간을 아주 즐기는 척했다.

Ben started to get more interested.

벤은 점점 흥미가 생기기 시작했다.

He said, “Tom, let me try.”

그가 말했다. “톰, 내가 해볼게.”

“No, no.

“아냐, 아냐.

Only I can do it.

나만 할 수 있어.

No other boy in the world can paint as well as me.”

이 세상 어느 남자아이도 나만큼 페인트칠을 잘할 수는 없다고.”

“Please let me try,” begged Ben.

“제발 내가 해볼게.” 벤이 간절히 부탁했다.

“I’ll give you my apple!”

“네게 내 사과를 줄게!”

At last, Tom agreed with a long face, but with a joyous heart.

마침내 톰은 침울한 표정으로, 하지만 신나는 마음으로 동의했다.

He sat down to eat the apple while Ben started to work.

벤이 일을 시작하는 동안 그는 사과를 먹기 위해 앉았다.
