When we think of ancient Egypt, we imagine the great pyramids.

고대 이집트를 생각할 때 우리는 거대한 피라미드를 상상한다.

But ancient Egyptians also made many kinds of art, including paintings.

그러나 고대 이집트인들은 그림을 포함하여 많은 종류의 예술품 또한 만들었다.

Egyptian painters followed the same rules for more than 3,500 years!

이집트 화가들은 똑같은 규칙들을 3,500년이 넘도록 따랐다!

So it’s easy to recognize the ancient Egyptian style.

그래서 고대 이집트 양식을 알아보는 것은 쉽다.

Egyptian painters often painted people.

이집트 화가들은 사람들을 자주 그렸다.

However, the people they painted didn’t look very realistic.

그러나 그들이 그린 사람들은 별로 사실적으로 보이지 않았다.

If you try to stand like them, you would fall over!

만일 당신이 그들처럼 서 있으려 한다면 당신은 넘어질 것이다!

The painters drew each part of the body from its best-looking angle.

화가들은 신체의 각 부분을 그것이 가장 좋게 보이는 각도에서 그렸다.

The head was drawn from the side so the shape of the nose and mouth could be seen.

머리는 코와 입의 모양이 보일 수 있도록 측면에서 (본 모양으로) 그려졌다.

But the eye was drawn from the front because it looked most interesting that way.

그러나 눈은 정면에서 (본 모양으로) 그려졌는데 그런 식으로 해야 그것이 가장 흥미롭게 보였기 때문이다.

The upper body was also drawn from the front.

상체 또한 정면에서 (본 모양으로) 그려졌다.

The legs, however, were drawn from the side like the person was walking.

그러나 다리는 그 사람이 걷고 있는 것처럼 측면에서 (본 모양으로) 그려졌다.

There were rules about the size of a person too.

사람의 크기에 대한 규칙들도 있었다.

Size was used to show how important the person was.

크기는 그 사람이 얼마나 중요한지를 보여 주는 데 사용되었다.

Of course, kings appeared very large in paintings.

물론 왕들은 그림에서 매우 큰 모습으로 등장했다.

But when the gods were painted, their size was even greater.

그러나 신들이 그려질 때 그들의 크기는 훨씬 더 컸다.

Now, with these rules in mind, Egyptian paintings should be more interesting to look at.

이제, 이러한 규칙들을 염두에 둔다면 이집트 그림들이 보기에 더 재미있을 것이다.
