I love to travel, but I’m not a regular tourist.

I’m interested in visiting historical sites where terrible things happened.

So I went to two sites during my summer vacation.

The first site was Karosta Prison in the European country of Latvia.

In the past, it was used as a military prison by the Nazis and Russians.

But today it’s a hotel.

Even though I was a guest, I was treated like a prisoner!

The hotel employees dressed like prison guards and punished me when I did not listen to them.

호텔 직원들은 교도관처럼 차려입었고 내가 그들의 말을 듣지 않았을 때 벌을 줬다.

It was a lot of fun but also a little scary.

그것은 정말 재미있었지만 약간 무섭기도 했다.

I was very relieved when I checked out and was free again!

I also visited the Robben Island Prison Museum in South Africa.

Political prisoners used to be kept there.

I took a tour of the island and the prison.

My tour guide was a former prisoner! He told me about his personal experiences.

He also showed me the small cell that Nelson Mandela lived in for eighteen years.

It was an amazing trip!

You might think it is strange to visit these places.

But I think it is an educational experience.

We need to learn about dark events in human history so we can stop them from happening again.
