From 1876 to 1965, there were laws in some parts of America to keep white people separated from non-white people in public places.

1876년에서 1965년까지 미국의 일부 지역에는 공공장소에서 백인을 유색인들과 분리해두는 법규들이 있었다.

These were known as the Jim Crow laws.

이것들은 짐 크로 법(Jim Crow laws)이라고 알려져 있었다.

Because of these laws, there were “Whites Only” signs in many schools, restaurants, theaters, and hotels.

The places that non-whites could use were marked with “Colored” signs.

Even marriages between white and non-white people were not allowed in many states.

Fortunately, these laws were finally ended by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
