Have you ever seen a prairie dog?

Actually, I am one.

We are a type of squirrel.

우리는 일종의 다람쥐에요.

We live in underground tunnels.

우리는 땅속 굴에 살아요.

Fruit and vegetables are our favorite foods.

과일과 채소는 우리가 가장 좋아하는 음식이죠.

You can find prairie dogs almost everywhere in North America.

여러분은 북미의 거의 어디서나 프레리도그를 발견할 수 있어요.

We are very social and live in large groups of a few families.

우리는 사회성이 매우 좋으며 몇몇의 가족으로 이루어진 큰 무리를 지어 살아요.

Aren’t you curious about why we are called prairie dogs?

왜 우리가 프레리도그라고 불리는지 궁금하지 않나요?

First, a prairie is a large area of flat, grassy land.

첫째, 프레리(prairie)는 평평하고 풀이 많은 땅을 가진 넓은 지역이에요.

That’s where we live.

바로 우리가 사는 곳이죠.

Second, we are called dogs because of the barking sound we make.

둘째, 우리는 우리가 내는 짖는 소리 때문에 도그(dog)라고 불려요.

So why do we bark?

그러면 우리가 왜 짖냐고요?

Well, we have many predators, such as eagles and coyotes.

음, 우리에게는 독수리와 코요테 같은 많은 포식 동물들이 있어요.

When we feel danger from them, we bark loudly to warn our family and friends.

우리가 그들로부터 위험을 느끼면 우리는 우리 가족과 친구들에게 경고하기 위해 큰 소리로 짖어요.

You can imagine how important our barking sound is.

여러분은 우리의 짖는 소리가 얼마나 중요한지 상상할 수 있을 거예요.

You may not believe me, but we make different sounds for different levels of danger.

여러분은 제 말을 믿지 않을 수도 있겠지만, 우리는 서로 다른 위험의 정도에 따라 다른 소리를 낸답니다.
