It was World War II, and many European cities were being destroyed.

Many buildings and artwork that had great artistic and historic value were being destroyed, too.

So, the Monuments Men, a group of more than 300 people, was formed to protect these items.

They were museum directors, historians, artists, and architects.

Although they had never received basic military training, they entered dangerous war zones and performed their duties.
