Like many countries, / Santa is a part of Iceland’s celebrations, / but before him, / the people of Iceland had Yule Lads.

The Yule Lads are thirteen mischievous trolls.

For centuries, / they were known / as creepy figures / to scare children into behaving well / all year.

Nowadays, / however, / the Yule Lads are seen as a reward system, / an extension of Santa’s work during Christmas.

Thirteen days before Christmas, / children place one of their shoes / on the windowsill, / and a Yule Lad takes turns / visiting their homes each night.

If the children have been good, / a Yule Lad will leave a toy or a treat / in their shoes.

If they haven’t (been good), / a Yule Lad will place a potato / as punishment for misbehaving.

Many Icelandic parents / do not put any potatoes / in their children’s shoes anymore, / but it is still told / as a warning / to behave well.
