It’s Greek to Me

그건 모두 저에게 그리스말 같아요

Have you heard the expression, “It’s Greek to me”?

“그건 저에게 그리스말 같아요”라는 표현을 들어본 적 있는가?

It means “I can’t understand what you are saying because it sounds like a foreign language to me.”

이는 “저는 당신이 말하는 것을 이해하지 못하겠어요, 왜냐하면 그것이 저에게는 외국어처럼 들려서요”라는 의미이다.

You may wonder why it is not French or Italian but Greek.

여러분은 왜 그것이 프랑스어나 이탈리아어가 아니라 그리스어인지 궁금해할 것이다.

The reason is that the Ancient Greeks had an enormous influence on Western culture.

그 이유는 고대 그리스인들이 서양 문화에 엄청난 영향을 끼쳤기 때문이다.

Greece was the birthplace of Classical Western civilization, and therefore, also left us with some pretty great idioms.

그리스는 고전 서양 문명의 발생지이며, 그렇기에 우리에게 멋진 관용어를 남겨주었다.

Idioms pose a special challenge in language learning because their meanings are different from the words that make them up.
