The Irish experienced a great disaster over a hundred years ago.

It all started because of a plant disease.

In the 1800s, Britain ruled Ireland.

Wealthy British men owned most of the land.

So Irish farmers had to pay them rent to use it.

The farmers sold grain and animals to make money.

Then, in 1845, a plant disease started to spread in Ireland.

That year Irish farmers lost around half of their potato crop.

Without any potatoes to eat, people became hungry and weak.

Many died from illness or hunger.
