Microscopes have been an essential tool for science for over 400 years.

현미경은 400년 이상 과학의 필수 도구로 사용되어 왔다.

If microscopes had not been invented, we might not have discovered bacteria or the microscopic structures of living organisms.

현미경이 발명되지 않았다면 우리는 박테리아나 생명체의 미세한 구조를 발견하지 못했을지도 모른다.

In certain areas of the world, however, even basic light microscopes are not accessible due to their cost.

그러나 일부 지역에서는 기본적인 광학 현미경조차도 가격 때문에 접근하기 어려운 실정이다.

It was the Foldscope that Manu Prakash and Jim Cybulski presented as a solution to the problem.

Manu Prakash와 Jim Cybulski가 이 문제에 대한 해결책으로 제시한 것이 바로 폴드스코프이다.

The Foldscope, a paper microscope they invented, achieved powerful magnification, and cost less than a dollar in parts.

이들이 발명한 종이 현미경 폴드스코프는 강력한 배율을 구현하면서도 부품 가격이 1달러도 안 되었다.

“The idea has been to make science accessible to everybody,” said Prakash.

“누구나 과학을 쉽게 접할 수 있게 하자는 취지였습니다.”라고 Prakash는 말했다.
