The Dot

점

Art class was over. Vashti did not leave the classroom. Her paper was empty.

미술 수업이 끝났다. Vashti는 교실을 떠나지 않았다. 그녀의 종이는 비어 있었다.

Vashti’s teacher looked at the empty paper.

Vashti의 선생님은 빈 종이를 보았다.

“Ah! It’s a polar bear in a snowstorm,” she said.

“아! 이것은 눈보라 속에 있는 북극곰이구나,” 그녀가 말했다.

“Very funny!” said Vashti.

“아주 재미있네요!” Vashti가 말했다.

“I just can’t draw.”

“저는 그냥 못 그리겠어요.”

Her teacher smiled and shook her head.

그녀의 선생님은 미소 지었고 그녀의 머리를 저었다.

“Just make a mark. It will take you somewhere.”

“그냥 점 하나를 만들어 봐. 그것이 너를 어딘가로 데려다 줄 거야.”

Vashti picked up a pen and poked the paper. “There!”

Vashti는 펜을 집고 종이를 쿡 찔렀다. “여기요!”

Her teacher picked up the paper and looked at it carefully.

그녀의 선생님은 종이를 집어 들고 주의 깊게 보았다.

She returned the paper to Vashti and said, “Now sign it.”

그녀는 종이를 Vashti에게 돌려주며 말했다, “이제 이것에 서명하렴.”

Vashti thought for a moment.

Vashti는 잠시 동안 생각했다.

“Well, maybe I can’t draw, but I can sign my name.”

“음, 저는 아마 그림은 못 그릴지 그리지만 제 이름을 서명할 수 있어요.”

Next week, Vashti walked into art class.

다음 주에 Vashti는 미술 수업에 들어갔다.

She was surprised.

그녀는 놀랐다.

There was a picture above the teacher’s desk.

선생님의 책상 위에 그림이 한 점 있었다.

It was her dot in a gold frame!

그것은 금색 액자에 있는 그녀의 점이었다!

“Hmm! I can make a better dot than that!”

“음! 나는 저것보다 더 나은 점을 만들 수 있어!”

She opened her set of watercolors and started to work.

그녀는 자신의 수채화 그림물감 세트를 열고 작업하기 시작했다.

Vashti painted and painted more to create dots.

Vashti는 점을 만들기 위해 더 그리고 그렸다.

A red dot. A yellow dot. A blue dot.

빨간 점. 노란 점. 파란 점.

She mixed the blue with the yellow.

그녀는 파란색을 노란색과 섞었다.

She could make a green dot!

그녀는 초록색 점을 만들었다!

She was very happy with herself.

그녀는 그녀 자신에게 매우 만족했다.

“I made lots of little dots. I guess I can make big ones, too.”

“나는 많은 작은 점을 만들었어. 나는 더 큰 것도 만들 수 있어.”

Vashti used a bigger brush and bigger paper to make bigger dots.

Vashti는 더 큰 점을 만들기 위해 더 큰 붓과 더 큰 종이를 사용했다.

Vashti even made a dot without painting one.

Vashti는 심지어 하나를 색칠하지 않고 점 하나를 만들었다.

She painted the whole paper except the round center.

그녀는 둥근 중앙 부분을 제외하고 종이 전체를 색칠했다.

There was a white dot!

흰색 점이 있었다!

A few weeks later, the school art show took place.

몇 주 후에 학교 미술 전시회가 열렸다.

Vashti’s many dots were a big success!

Vashti의 많은 점은 대성공이었다!

Vashti saw a little boy.

Vashti는 어린 남자아이를 보았다.

He was standing beside her.

그는 그녀 옆에 서 있었다.

“You’re a great artist. I want to paint like you,” he said.

“당신은 대단한 예술가예요. 저는 당신처럼 그리고 싶어요,” 그가 말했다.

“I’m sure you can. Trust yourself,” said Vashti.

“나는 네가 할 수 있다고 확신해. 너 자신을 믿어,” Vashti가 말했다.

“No, I can’t even draw a straight line.”

“아뇨, 저는 직선 하나조차 그릴 수 없어요.”

Vashti smiled. She handed the boy a piece of paper.

Vashti가 미소 지었다. 그녀는 그 남자아이에게 종이 한 장을 건네주었다.

“Show me.”

“나에게 보여 줘.”

The boy’s pencil shook while he drew a line.

그 남자아이가 선을 그리는 동안 그 남자아이의 연필이 흔들렸다.

The line was not straight.

그 선은 곧지 않았다.

Vashti looked at it carefully and said, “Please ... sign it.”

Vashti는 그것을 주의 깊게 보고 말했다, “이것에 … 서명해 주렴.”
