After working hard all day long, a boy would go up to the top of a hill and look across at another hill.

On this far hill stood a house with windows of gold and diamond.
이 먼 언덕에는 금과 다이아몬드로 만들어진 창문이 있는 집이 서 있었다.
They shone at sunset, but after a while, the fascinating light disappeared.
창문은 일몰에 반짝였지만 얼마 후에 그 매혹적인 빛이 사라졌다.
The boy supposed that the people in the house closed the shutters because it was dinnertime.
소년은 저녁 식사 시간이므로 집 안의 사람들이 덧문을 닫았다고 추측했다.
One day, the boy’s father called him over and said, “You have been a good boy and have earned a holiday.
어느 날 소년의 아버지가 소년을 불러 “네가 착하게 굴어서 휴일을 얻었단다.
Take the day off, but try to learn something important.”
쉬는 날을 가지되 중요한 것을 배우려고 노력하렴.”이라고 말했다.
The boy thanked his father and kissed his mother; then he took a piece of bread, and left to find the house with the golden windows.
소년은 아버지에게 감사를 표하고 어머니에게 키스했다. 그러고 나서 그는 빵 한 조각을 챙겨 금으로 된 창문이 있는 집을 찾으러 떠났다.
His journey was enjoyable.
그의 여정은 즐거웠다.
His bare feet made marks in the white sand.
그의 맨발은 흰 모래 위에 자국을 남겼다.
When he looked back, the footprints seemed to be following him and keeping him company.

He scattered the remaining pieces of bread for the birds, as his mother had taught him to do, and went on his way.

After a long time, he came to a high green hill, and the house was at the top.

It seemed that the shutters were closed, for he could not see the golden windows.

He came up to the house and was disappointed to find that the windows were made of clear glass, like any others, and there was no gold anywhere around them.

A woman came to the door, looked kindly at the boy, and asked him what he wanted.

“I saw the golden windows from the top of our hill,” he said, “and I came to see them, but now they are only glass.”
“저는 저희 쪽 언덕 꼭대기에서 금으로 된 창문을 봤어요. 그리고 그것들을 보러 왔지만 지금은 그저 유리일 뿐이에요.”라고 그가 말했다.
The woman shook her head and laughed.
그 여성은 고개를 흔들고 웃었다.
“We are poor farming people,” she said, “and are not likely to have windows made of gold; but glass is better to see through.”

She told the boy to sit down on the step in front of the door, brought him a snack, and called her daughter, a girl of his own age.
그녀는 소년에게 문 앞의 계단에 앉으라고 말하고 그에게 간식을 가져다준 뒤 그와 비슷한 나이의 소녀인 그녀의 딸을 불렀다.
Then she smiled at the two and went back to her work.
그리고 그녀는 두 사람에게 미소를 지은 뒤 일을 하러 돌아갔다.
Although the girl’s clothes were modest, her hair was golden like the windows he had seen, and her eyes were blue like the sky.
비록 소녀의 옷은 수수했지만 그녀의 머리카락은 그가 봤던 창문처럼 금빛이었고, 그녀의 눈은 하늘처럼 파란색이었다.
She led the boy around the farm and showed him her black calf, which had a white star on its forehead.
그녀는 소년을 농장으로 데리고 가서 그녀의 검은 송아지를 보여 주었는데 그 송아지는 이마에 흰색 별이 있었다.
The boy told her about his own calf at home, which was red like a chestnut and had white feet.
소년은 그녀에게 집에 있는 그의 송아지에 대해 이야기했는데 그 송아지는 밤과 같은 붉은색이었고 흰색 발을 갖고 있었다.
Feeling as if they were now friends, the boy asked her about the golden windows.
이제 마치 그들은 친구인 것처럼 느껴서 소년은 그녀에게 금으로 된 창문에 대해 물었다.
The girl said she knew all about them, only he had mistaken which house had them.
소녀는 그것에 대해 모두 알고 있다고 했고, 다만 그가 어떤 집이 그것들을 가지고 있는지를 착각했다고 말했다.
“You have come the wrong way!” she said.

The girl told him that the golden windows could only be seen at sunset.

They went to a high place and saw a house with windows of gold and diamond on a hill far away, just as the boy had seen before.
그들은 높은 장소로 가서 소년이 전에 봤던 것처럼 금과 다이아몬드로 된 창문이 있는 멀리 있는 언덕 위의 집을 보았다.
And when they looked again, the boy recognized that it was his own home.
그리고 그들이 다시 보았을 때, 소년은 그것이 자신의 집이라는 것을 알아보았다.
Then he told the girl that he must go; and he gave her his best pebble, a white one with a red stripe that he had carried with him for a year; and she gave him three horse-chestnuts, one red, one spotted, and one white.
그러고 나서 그는 소녀에게 가야 한다고 말하고 그의 최고의 조약돌인, 그가 1년 동안 갖고 다녔던 빨간색 줄무늬가 있는 흰색 조약돌을 그녀에게 주었고, 그녀는 그에게 빨간색, 점무늬, 흰색인 마로니에 열매 세 개를 주었다.
He promised to come again, but he did not tell her what he had learned.

The girl stood in the light of the sunset and watched him go.

It was dark when the boy finally returned home, but the windows of his home were shining with the light of lamps just like he had seen from the top of the hill.
소년이 마침내 집에 돌아왔을 때(밖은) 어두웠지만 그의 집의 창문은 그가 언덕 꼭대기에서 봤던 것처럼 전등 불빛으로 빛나고 있었다.
His family welcomed him warmly.
그의 가족은 그를 따뜻하게 맞이했다.
“Have you had a good day?” asked his mother.
“좋은 하루를 보냈니?”라고 그의 어머니가 물었다.
Yes, the boy had had a very good day.
맞다, 소년은 정말 좋은 하루를 보냈다.
“And have you learned anything?” asked his father.
“그리고 무언가를 배웠니?”라고 그의 아버지가 물었다.
“Yes!” said the boy.
“네!”라고 소년이 말했다.
“I have learned that our house has windows of gold and diamond.”
