Pan’s Beautiful Instrument

팬의 아름다운 악기

Pan was the Greek god of shepherds.

팬은 그리스의 양치기들의 신이었어요.

He loved being in nature and having fun with the animals.

그는 자연에 머무르며 동물들과 재미있게 노는 것을 좋아했어요.

He looked very strange though.

하지만 그는 매우 이상하게 보였죠.

Unlike most people, he had the horns, ears, legs, and tail of a goat!

대부분의 사람들과 다르게, 그에게는 염소의 뿔, 귀, 다리, 꼬리가 있었어요.

One morning, Pan was walking through a forest when he saw a beautiful nymph named Syrinx.

어느 날 아침, 팬은 숲 속을 걸어가다가 시링크스라는 이름의 아름다운 요정을 봤어요.

Instantly, he fell in love and ran towards her.

즉시 그는 사랑에 빠져서 그녀를 향해 달려갔어요.

Of course, Syrinx ran away because Pan scared her.

물론, 시링크스는 팬이 무서워서 달아났죠.

Through the woods she ran and ran until she came to a river.

그녀는 강에 다다를 때까지 숲 속을 지나 달리고 또 달렸어요.

She couldn’t cross it, so she stopped.

그녀는 강을 건널 수 없어서 멈췄어요.

Then, she saw Pan coming.

그때 팬이 오고 있는 게 보였어요.

She was afraid that he would catch her, so she called out, “Water nymphs, please save me!”

그녀는 그가 자신을 잡을까 두려워서 소리쳤어요, "물의 요정님, 제발 저를 구해주세요!"

As Pan reached the river, the water nymphs answered Syrinx’s prayer.

팬이 강에 이르렀을 때, 물의 요정들이 시링크스의 기도에 응답했어요.

They turned her into some reeds, causing Pan to sigh in sadness.

그들은 그녀를 갈대로 변하게 했고, 팬은 슬픔으로 한숨을 쉬게 됐어요.

His sighs passed over the reeds.

그의 한숨은 갈대를 스치며 지나갔어요.

They made beautiful sounds that reminded Pan of Syrinx.

그것은 팬에게 시링크스를 생각나게 하는 아름다운 소리를 냈죠.

Then, he had an idea.

그때 그에게 아이디어가 떠올랐어요.

He cut the reeds up into different sizes and tied them together.

그는 갈대를 다른 크기로 잘라서 함께 묶었어요.

In this way, he created the first panpipe.

이렇게 해서 그는 최초의 팬 파이프를 만들게 됐죠.

From then on, Pan played the panpipe everywhere he went to remember the beautiful Syrinx.

그때부터 팬은 아름다운 시링크스를 기억하기 위해서 어디를 가든 팬 파이프를 연주했답니다.
