From Dream to Reality

My brother Étienne and I were fascinated with things that could float in the air.

내 남동생 에띠엔과 나는 공기 중에 뜰 수 있는 것들에 매료되었어요.

One day in November 1782, I wondered if a cloth bag could float.

1782년 11월의 어느 날, 나는 천 가방이 뜰 수 있는지 궁금했어요.

To find out, I lit a fire under it.

Amazingly, it rose up!

놀랍게도 그것은 떠올랐어요!

I wrote to Étienne right away to tell him the news.

Together, we started to make larger bags, or balloons, and flew them outside.

함께 우리는 더 큰 가방이나 풍선들을 만들기 시작했고 그것들을 밖에서 날렸죠.

On June 4, 1783, we flew one of our hot air balloons in front of other people for the first time.

1783년 6월 4일에 우리는 최초로 다른 사람들 앞에서 우리의 열기구 중 하나를 띄웠어요.

Everyone was amazed and even a little scared by it!

모두가 놀랐고 심지어 약간 겁을 먹기도 했어요!

Next, we decided to put a sheep, duck, and rooster in a basket attached to a balloon to see if going up high hurt them.

다음으로 우리는 풍선에 달린 바구니에 양, 오리, 수탉을 넣기로 결정했어요. 높이 올라가는 것이 그것들을 다치게 하는지 어떤지 보기 위해서였죠.

They were the world’s first hot air balloon passengers.

King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette watched this balloon fly on September 19.

루이 16세와 마리 앙투아네트 여왕이 9월 19일에 이 열기구가 뜨는 것을 지켜보셨어요.

Both of them were very impressed by it.

두 분 다 그것을 보고 매우 깊은 인상을 받으셨죠.

Later, we sent a person up in a balloon on October 15.

그 후, 우리는 10월 15일에 사람을 열기구에 태워서 띄웠어요.

However, the balloon was still tied to the ground by a rope.

하지만 열기구는 아직 밧줄로 땅에 묶여 있었죠.

Finally, two people flew in one of our balloons on November 21 without any ropes!

마침내 두 사람이 11월 21일에 밧줄 없이 우리 열기구 중 하나를 타고 날아갔어요.

Everyone watching cheered loudly and congratulated us on how far our balloon flew.

보고 있던 모두가 큰 소리로 환호하고 우리 열기구가 아주 멀리 날아간 것에 대해 우리에게 축하해 줬죠.

Just a year after my first discovery, we, Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier, had made history.

나의 최초의 발견 이후 딱 1년 만에 우리, 조제프와 에띠엔 몽골피에가 역사를 만든 거예요.
