Jeong Segwon was a businessman who founded Geonyangsa in 1920.

정세권은 1920년에 건양사를 설립한 사업가였다.

At the time, Korea was ruled by Japan, and the Japanese were changing Gyeongseong to fit their taste.

그 당시 한국은 일본의 지배를 받았고, 일본인들은 경성을 자신들의 취향에 맞게 바꾸고 있었다.

Many Japanese moving into Gyeongseong were building Japanese or Western houses.

경성으로 이주한 많은 일본인들은 일본식이나 서양식 가옥을 짓고 있었다.

Jeong Segwon wanted to protect the hanok and help the suffering people.

정세권은 한옥을 지키고, 고통받는 사람들을 돕기를 원했다.

He said, “People are power."

그는 말했다, “사람이 힘이다."

We Joseon people should keep Jongno and not let the Japanese set foot here.

우리 조선 사람들은 종로를 지켜야 하며, 일본인들이 이곳에 발붙이지 못하게 해야 한다.

He bought the land between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung.

그는 경복궁과 창덕궁 사이에 땅을 샀다.

There he built small, modern hanoks for the people.

그곳에 그는 (조선) 사람들을 위해 소규모 현대식 한옥을 지었다.

Through his efforts, we now have Bukchon filled with its beautiful hanoks.

그의 노력으로, 현재 북촌은 아름다운 한옥으로 가득 차 있다.
