If you want a new computer or new clothes, what do you need to get them?

새 컴퓨터나 새 옷이 갖고 싶을 때, 그것들을 구하려면 무엇이 필요한가?

Well, all you need is money.

필요한 것은 돈 뿐이다.

But when did people start using money?

하지만 사람들은 언제 돈을 사용하기 시작했을까?

The history of money is quite interesting.

돈의 역사는 꽤 흥미롭다.

Before money was invented, people used the barter system to get what they wanted.

돈이 발명되기 전에 사람들은 물물교환 체제를 이용해 원하는 것을 구했다.

To barter means to trade goods or services for other goods or services.

물물교환을 한다는 것은 재화나 용역을 다른 재화나 용역과 바꾼다는 뜻이다.

For example, someone could trade one horse for one cow.

예를 들어, 말 한 마리를 소 한 마리로 바꿀 수 있었다.

However, the barter system had several problems.

하지만, 물물교환 체제에는 여러 문제점이 있었다.

People did not always agree on how much one thing was worth compared to another.

한 가지 물건이 다른 물건과 비교해 얼마나 가치가 있는지에 대해 늘 의견이 일치하지는 않았다.

There was also a problem called the “double coincidence of wants.”

또한 "욕망의 이중 일치"라는 문제도 있었다.

For example, what if a man wanted to trade his horse for a cow?

예를 들어, 한 사람이 자신의 말을 소 한 마리와 바꾸고 싶어했다면 어떻게 해야 하는가?

He would have to find someone who had a cow, but needed a horse.

그는 소 한 마리를 갖고 있으나 말을 갖고 싶어하는 사람을 찾아야 했을 것이다.

The invention of money solved these kinds of problems.

돈의 발명은 이러한 종류의 문제를 해결했다.
