While walking down the street, / a woman is approached by a stranger.

길을 걷고 있는데 / 한 여성에게 낯선 사람이 다가간다

He asks for directions, / and they start to have a conversation.

그가 길을 묻자 / 그들은 대화를 시작한다

Suddenly, / two men carrying a large piece of wood / walk between them.

갑자기 / 커다란 나무 토막을 운반하는 두 남성이 / 그들 사이를 지나간다

During the interruption, / the stranger walks away / and is replaced by a different man.

중단된 동안에 / 그 낯선 사람은 가버리고 / 그는 다른 남성으로 교체된다

After the wood is gone, / he continues the conversation.

나무가 지나간 뒤 / 그는 대화를 계속한다

What just happened?

방금 무슨 일이 있었는가?

Well, / the two men were conducting a scientific experiment.

자 / 두 남자는 과학 실험을 하는 중이었다

And here’s the amazing part— / the woman didn’t even notice / that the person she was talking to / had changed!

그리고 놀라운 점은 / 여성이 알아채지 못했다는 것이다 / 자신이 대화하고 있던 사람이 / 바뀌었다는 것을

This phenomenon is known as “change blindness.”

이 현상은 ‘변화맹’이라고 알려져 있다

In certain situations, / people don’t notice changes, / however large they are.

특정 상황에서 / 사람들은 변화를 알아채지 못한다 / 그것이 아무리 크다고 하더라도

The reason is / that it is impossible / for the brain to process / every single piece of information / it detects.

그 이유는 / 불가능하기 때문이다 / 뇌가 처리하는 것이 / 모든 정보를 / 그것이 감지하는

Therefore, / it must choose what to focus on.

따라서 / 그것은 무엇에 집중할지 선택해야만 한다

As a result, / a lot of information gets passed by.

결과적으로 / 많은 정보가 스쳐 지나간다

In other words, / when changes occur in things / we aren’t focusing on, / we tend not to notice them!

다시 말해서 / 변화가 생길 때 / 우리가 집중하지 않고 있는 것들에 / 우리는 그것들을 알아채지 못하는 경향이 있다
