How many eyes do green iguanas have?

That might seem like a simple question.

But, surprisingly, the answer is three!

Their third eye is located in the center of their forehead.

Called a parietal eye, it is not the same as their other two eyes.

It has a lens and a retina like normal eyes, but they are not fully formed.

However, this third eye can still see to some extent.

It is able to detect movement and changes in light.

Because of this, iguanas can use it to sense predators.

Since it is on top of their head, it is especially useful for escaping birds of prey, such as eagles and hawks.

Iguanas aren’t the only animals with a parietal eye.

Some other lizard species, as well as certain frogs and fish, also have one.

Scientists believe that millions of years ago many animals had a third, fully functional eye.

Over time, however, it slowly disappeared in most species, remaining as a parietal eye in only a few — including the green iguana.
