Praying mantises are elusive creatures.

사마귀는 찾기 힘든 생물이다.

But if you look carefully, you may find one hidden in your garden, though they are nearly invisible amongst plant leaves and stems.

Interestingly, mantises have five eyes, including three small, simple eyes and two large compound eyes.

What’s more surprising is that they have only one ear, which can be found on their chest between their back legs!

Animals with two ears can identify differences in the timing and intensity of the sounds reaching each ear.

So what does a mantis’s ear do?

Despite its limitations, the ear plays a vital role in detecting life threatening situations.

It has the ability to detect ultrasonic waves such as the sounds emitted by bats, one of the mantis’ primary predators.

As soon as a mantis senses a bat, which it can do from up to 10 meters away, it immediately dives toward the ground to avoid capture.

Though the mantis’ single ear may seem strange, it is crucial to their survival.
