First you put on your shoes.

Then you tie your shoelaces tightly.

Why does this happen?

It was a mystery until recently.

Researchers used a high-speed camera to film the shoelaces of a person running on a treadmill.

For a long time, the shoelaces stayed tightly tied.

And then they suddenly untied!

According to the researchers, there are two reasons for this.

The first reason is the force of a person’s foot hitting the ground when they walk.

This impact causes the knots in the shoelaces to stretch and loosen.

The second reason is the shaking of the ends of the shoelaces.

As they shake, they pull on the knot, slowly untying it.

The planet Jupiter has almost one hundred moons.

Interestingly, one of these moons has lots of volcanoes on its surface!

It is called Io, and it’s Jupiter ’s third largest moon.

It orbits the planet closer than the two larger moons.

As a result, the gravitational forces of Jupiter and the other moons pull on Io in opposite directions.

This creates heat inside Io and melts the rock inside it.
