In the Pacific Ocean, most plastic ends up in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The Garbage Patch is a huge zone made up of floating plastic trash.

But how did it get there?

Most of the plastic in the Garbage Patch comes from land.

Ocean currents carry it from coastlines toward the Garbage Patch.

As the plastic floats along the waves, sunlight breaks it down into tiny pieces.

These pieces contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to marine life.

A big concern is that the size of the Garbage Patch is growing every year.

Luckily, a team of scientists from the Netherlands is trying to take care of the problem.

In 2018, they created a new device to remove plastic from the Garbage Patch.

The device is a six-hundred-meter-long tube nicknamed the Giant Pac-Man.

The enormous tube floats along the surface of the water.

It has a three-meter-deep barrier attached below.

The barrier collects floating plastic waste as it moves across the ocean.

A Day on the Ocean

Marissa and her mom were out on the ocean with her uncle.

The animals get trapped in them and die because no one comes to retrieve the nets.

After he put on some gear, her uncle dove in to remove the nets.

Marissa and her mom watched as he cut them from the coral.
