There Are Bugs in My Drink!

Where does the red color in your strawberry smoothie come from?

딸기 스무디의 빨간 색은 어디에서 비롯되었을까?

It isn’t strawberries.

그건 딸기가 아니다.

It comes from small bugs called cochineals.

그것은 연지벌레(cochineals)라는 작은 벌레에서 비롯되었다.

Cochineals are native to Central and South America.

연지벌레는 중남미가 원산지이다.

People use them to dye foods and fabrics.

사람들은 그것들을 음식과 직물을 염색하는 데 사용한다.

Farmers catch the bugs and let them dry in the sun.

농부들은 연지벌레를 잡아 햇볕에 말린다.

Then they grind the bugs into a powder.

그런 다음 그들은 그 벌레들을 갈아 가루로 만든다.

When the powder is mixed with water, it turns the water red.

This red color comes from the cactus berry, the favorite food of cochineals.
