Throughout history, different cultures used very different number systems from the one we use today.

역사를 통틀어, 서로 다른 문화권들은 오늘날 우리가 사용하는 것과 매우 다른 숫자 체계를 사용했다.

So how did we end up with our current numbers?

The earliest numbers took the form of tally marks.

가장 초기의 숫자들은 선 표시의 형태를 띄었다.

Our ancestors used these marks to count animals in their flocks.

우리 조상들은 이 표시들을 사용하여 그들의 동물 무리에서 동물들의 수를 세었다.

This tally system worked well for some time.

But as societies became more complex, we needed to write larger numbers, and tally marks became too inconvenient.

To solve this problem, people began using symbols in place of certain numbers.

Ancient Romans used symbols like V and X for “five” and “ten,” whereas the ancient Greeks used symbols like Π and Δ.

고대 로마인들은 다섯이나 열을 대신해 V나 X와 같은 기호를 사용했고, 고대 그리스인들은 Π나 Δ같은 기호들을 사용했다.
