What do the words octopus, octagon, and October have in common?

문어(octopus), 팔각형(octagon), 그리고 10월(October)이란 단어들에는 어떤 공통점이 있는가?

They all share the same prefix, octo-. Octo is Latin for “eight.”

An octopus has eight legs, and an octagon has eight sides.

But why isn’t October the eighth month?

To answer this question, we have to go back about two thousand years to ancient Rome.

Long ago, the ancient Romans had a calendar consisting of ten months.

In this calendar, the year started in March, so October was the eighth month.

이 달력에는 한 해가 3월에 시작해서, 10월은 8번째 달이었다.

September, November, and December were also named after their positions in the calendar.

They took their names from the Latin numbers septem, novem, and decem, meaning “seven,” “nine,” and “ten,” respectively.

The months of July and August were originally based on numbers as well.
