Salespeople can’t stop thinking about the deal they are working on until they have closed it.
Fishermen can never forget the one that got away.
Do you know why?
According to Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik, people are more likely to think about unfinished tasks than completed ones.
This is called the Zeigarnik effect.
Surprisingly, she didn’t first notice it in a scientific laboratory or an interview, but in a restaurant.
She noted that the waiter could remember a large number of items ordered by his customers.
However, the moment he had delivered the meals to the customers, he would forget what he had served them.
From this experience, Zeigarnik theorized that an unfinished task creates psychological tension.
That means people remain anxious about an unfinished task and try to complete it as soon as possible.
In other words, people are motivated by the desire to get closure.
Think about the Zeigarnik effect the next time you study for an exam.
Before the exam, your head will be filled with knowledge and details.
But once the exam is over, it will probably feel completely empty!
Have you ever smelled something that took you back to a specific time or place?
That’s exactly what happens in Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time.
Because of the smell of a madeleine dipped in tea, a character suddenly remembers being at his aunt’s house as a child.
When you suddenly remember something clearly because of a scent, you are experiencing the “Proust phenomenon.”
The power of the Proust phenomenon has been demonstrated in scientific experiments.
Researcher Dr. Rachel Herz showed participants some images with accompanying scents.
Later she asked them to recall the pictures they saw.
When participants were allowed to smell the scents again, they were better able to remember the pictures than when they were given nothing to smell.
Dr. Herz then conducted this experiment using hearing and touch in addition to smell.
These senses, however, did not produce the same results.
This suggests that the sense of smell must be linked to the part of the brain that controls memories.
Dear Britney,
I’m a 13-year-old boy, and I’m afraid there’s something wrong with me.
I constantly feel like people are staring at me, judging the way I look.
Every day, I find myself changing outfits repeatedly before I go out, and last week I tripped and fell in the school cafeteria, which everyone saw!
Even though only a few people laughed, now I feel sick whenever I think about it.
What’s wrong with me? - Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
I have some good news for you: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you.
What you have is called “adolescent egocentrism,” which is a normal stage in adolescent development that most people experience between the ages of 12 and 15.
Unfortunately, it isn’t something you can control; it just gradually fades away as you age.
Teenagers typically describe it as feeling like they are being observed by an imaginary audience.
Wherever they go or whatever they do, it seems like this audience is watching their every move.
You’re not the only one who feels this way, and as you get older, this feeling will bother you less and less, so don’t worry! - Britney
While walking down the street, a woman is approached by a stranger.
He asks for directions, and they start to have a conversation.
Suddenly, two men carrying a large piece of wood walk between them.
During the interruption, the stranger walks away and is replaced by a different man.
After the wood is gone, he continues the conversation.
What just happened?
Well, the two men were conducting a scientific experiment.
And here’s the amazing part—the woman didn’t even notice that the person she was talking to had changed!
This phenomenon is known as “change blindness.”
In certain situations, people don’t notice changes, however large they are.
The reason is that it is impossible for the brain to process every single piece of information it detects.
Therefore, it must choose what to focus on.
As a result, a lot of information gets passed by.
In other words, when changes occur in things we aren’t focusing on, we tend not to notice them!
