Sometimes you have to eat things you don’t like.
But instead of complaining, just be grateful you’re not a dung beetle.
They eat nothing but animal waste!
Dung beetles are common across every continent except Antarctica.
There are thousands of different species, but they can all be divided into three main groups: rollers, tunnelers, and dwellers.
These terms describe how these beetles use the dung they find.
Rollers turn bits of dung into balls and bury them away from the dung pile.
The balls are then eaten or used as a nest.
Tunnelers dig underneath the pile to bury their treasures.
And dwellers simply live in dung piles.
So what sort of dung do these beetles prefer?
Different species have different tastes.
For example, most dung beetles prefer the dung of plant-eaters, but some specifically seek out that of meat-eaters.
No matter what type of dung it is, there is a dung beetle that likes feeding on it.
It might be hard to believe, but dung beetles make an important contribution to the environment they live in.
By eating and burying other animals’ waste, they return nutrients to the soil.
So, while you might not want to join them for a meal, you can still appreciate the work they do.
How many eyes do green iguanas have?
That might seem like a simple question.
But, surprisingly, the answer is three!
Their third eye is located in the center of their forehead.
Called a parietal eye, it is not the same as their other two eyes.
It has a lens and a retina like normal eyes, but they are not fully formed.
However, this third eye can still see to some extent.
It is able to detect movement and changes in light.
Because of this, iguanas can use it to sense predators.
Since it is on top of their head, it is especially useful for escaping birds of prey, such as eagles and hawks.
Iguanas aren’t the only animals with a parietal eye.
Some other lizard species, as well as certain frogs and fish, also have one.
Scientists believe that millions of years ago many animals had a third, fully functional eye.
Over time, however, it slowly disappeared in most species, remaining as a parietal eye in only a few — including the green iguana.
In a rare event, scientists were able to film a group of orcas hunting a whale shark, the largest fish species.
Whale sharks can grow up to eighteen meters long, as long as a bowling lane.
These giants are not top predators, eating only small shrimp, fish, and plankton with their meter-wide mouths.
Despite their gentle nature, they should not be misunderstood as easy prey.
Whale sharks have very thick skin, especially on their backs, making it difficult for predators to bite them.
The scientists finally have proof that can solve the mystery of how orcas can hunt this massive fish.
The orcas first collide with the whale shark.
Then the orcas work together to flip the startled fish upside down.
Once its unprotected belly is exposed, the whale shark is left vulnerable.
The orcas can then attack, causing the hunted fish to die.
Uncertain when their next meal will be, orcas prioritize the most nutritious parts, including the organs and the fish’s enormous fatty liver.
The scientists’ lucky encounter helped them learn about orcas’ remarkable intelligence and teamwork.
However, it came at the expense of the whale shark.
Even the most respectable of all musical institutions, the symphony orchestra, carries inside its DNA the legacy of the hunt.
The various instruments in the orchestra can be traced back to this most basic of survival methods ― their earliest forms were made either from the animal (horn, skin, gut, bone) or the weapons used in bringing the animal down (stick, bow).
Are we wrong to hear this history in the music itself, in the aggression and breathtaking intensity of those monumental symphonies that remain the core repertoire of the world’s leading orchestras?
Listening to Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Bruckner, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and other great composers, I can easily imagine bands of men starting to chase animals, using sound as a source and symbol of dominance, an expression of the will to predatory power.
