Before 1903, birds could freely fly in the air.

In 1903, French scientist Edouard Benedictus made a mistake.

He knocked over a glass flask in his lab.

Something strange happened.

The glass was not entirely broken.

Instead, it still kept its shape.

The secret was that the flask was once filled with cellulose nitrate.

After it dried, it left a thin plastic coating inside.
