Malala Yousafzai was born in a region of Pakistan known as the Swat Valley.

As a young girl, Malala loved to read and learn.

Since then, she began to speak out to the world about the importance of education.

She gave a powerful speech at the United Nations (U.N.) headquarters about the need for girls' education.

The U.N. then named July 12 Malala Day in her honor.
