I was almost speechless.

나는 말문이 막힐 지경이었다.

Suddenly Diego was not the sad little boy we had become used to.

갑자기 Diego는 우리가 익숙해 있었던 그 슬픈 꼬마 소년이 아니었다.

He was a very normal boy with a very special talent.

그는 매우 특별한 재능을 가진 아주 평범한 소년이었다.

“Diego!"

"You can swim!”

"너 수영할 수 있구나!”

“Yes, I can swim.”

“네, 수영할 수 있어요.”

“I mean you are able to swim really well."

“네가 수영을 정말 잘한다는 뜻이야."

"Brilliantly, in fact!”

"실은, 아주 훌륭해!”

“Do you think so?”

“그렇게 생각하세요?”

He asked without looking directly at me, but I saw a smile on his face.

그는 나를 똑바로 바라보지 않은 채 물었지만, 나는 그의 얼굴에서 미소를 보았다.

As we returned to the dormitory, Diego told me that his father had taught him how to swim in the river by their home.

우리가 기숙사로 돌아올 때, Diego는 아버지가 집 근처에 있는 강에서 그에게 수영하는 법을 가르쳐 주셨다고 나에게 말했다.

It was the first time he had talked about his life.

그가 자신의 삶에 대해 얘기한 것은 처음이었다.

I listened in silence, without making any corrections to his English, as he talked nonstop all the way back to the dormitory.

기숙사로 돌아오는 내내 그가 끊임없이 말할 때, 나는 그의 영어에 어떤 지적도 하지 않으면서 조용히 듣기만 했다.
