Big animals can be strong.

But one of the strongest animals on earth is one of the smallest!

It is the tardigrade.

It is 1.7 mm long.

It looks like a tiny bear, so it is also known as the “water bear.”

Water bears can live in extreme conditions.

For example, they can live without oxygen in space.

They are also found in places as hot as 150 °C and as cold as ‒273 °C.

They can even survive when they are boiled or frozen!

Water bears can enter cryptobiosis.

This is a state like death.

In this state, they decrease the amount of water in their body to 1%.

So they do not freeze to death.
