This is the problem faced by Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru.

It is located in the rainforest, so the villagers don’t have access to electricity.

But a university decided to help.

It gets energy from a plant growing in a box.

This energy is used to light up an LED bulb.

It sounds impossible, but the lamp actually works in a simple way.

Plants turn sunlight into food.

This also produces waste.

The waste enters the soil, where tiny creatures begin to break it up.

This process creates electrons.

The lamp takes in these electrons and stores them in a battery.

In 2015, the university donated ten of these lamps to the people of Nuevo Saposoa.
